What if aged care’s future depends not on more, but on reimagining care itself?
Precis
In the Barossa Valley, a regional South Australian community known for its deep sense of place and people, Barossa Village is reframing what it means to be an aged care provider. As a not-for-profit, community-owned organisation, Barossa Village delivers Independent Living, Community and Residential Care to over 1,000 older Australians every day, supported by a workforce of 260.
Regional providers face unique challenges such as workforce shortages, geographic isolation and increasing demand across the care continuum. Rather than seeing this as a limitation, Barossa Village is using it as a catalyst for innovation. Grounded in long-standing partnerships and local trust, the organisation is becoming a hub for wraparound services that connect aged care with broader community needs, creating earlier points of entry and more meaningful engagement.
Strategic partnerships now enable services beyond traditional aged care. These include emergency housing for people at risk of homelessness, a national first co-location with Lifeline, access to allied health and mental health supports, disability housing, vocational learning and employment pathways, volunteering opportunities and a community-owned artisan bakery.
This model enhances wellbeing through connection, relevance and dignity. It is about more than adding services. It is about embedding aged care into the everyday lived experience of community life.
Looking ahead, Barossa Village is leading the development of Heritage Park, a 3.5-hectare mixed-use precinct that will bring together dementia-friendly housing, primary care, intergenerational services and a new standard for community-based ageing in place.
This presentation will share how one regional provider is embracing its unique context to create integrated, person-led solutions that strengthen both aged care and community outcomes. Attendees will gain practical insight into how a regional provider can embed flexibility, innovation and partnerships into its service delivery to improve outcomes across the continuum of care.
