The composition of a governing body is critical to fulfilling strategic leadership. To enable organisational success, be that transformation of the organisation’s business, service and financial model, creating an innovative care model or drive outstanding safe and high-quality care the governing body must be comprised of people with the right skills, knowledge, experience and mindset. They must be able to empower internal and key external stakeholders to contribute to organisational success.

The governing body’s strategic leadership role, and the skills, knowledge, experience and mindset to enact it is often-overlooked in the conversation about governing body composition. Governing body member experience in oversighting organisational performance, ensuring compliance and managing risks are more likely to inform governing body composition.

This presentation will focus on:

• The governing body’s role of strategic leadership;

• How a governing body can assess whether it has the right skills, knowledge, experience and mindset/s to add value and benefit to organisational success; and

• How a governing body can go about transforming itself such that through its strategic leadership role it is adding value and benefit.
