Clinical Facilitators as Leaders: Shaping the Future of Aged Care through Mentorship
Kath has been a registered nurse for almost 25 years and has extensive clinical experience in paediatrics, emergency care, palliative care, and community nursing.
When she was seconded to fill a long-service-leave role as a graduate nurse educator, she found a passion for teaching. Kath completed her Training and Assessment Certificate IV and has since been a university sessional teacher and clinical facilitator.
Kath initially joined APNA as a clinical nurse facilitator, supervising nurses on placements in aged care. Since then, she’s become an integral part of the Career Pathways team, where she combines her skills, knowledge, and experience to help foster our future primary health care nurses.
Kath values each student’s individuality and creates a positive learning environment to maximise their learning. She takes great pride in seeing students grow in confidence, skills, and knowledge and in showcasing the positive benefits a primary health care nurse can make in people’s lives.
Precis
Clinical facilitators play a critical leadership role in shaping the future of aged care by mentoring student nurses during their practical placements. As frontline leaders, these experienced professionals guide and inspire the next generation of nurses, instilling the values, skills, and knowledge needed to excel in aged care. This abstract explores the leadership responsibilities of clinical facilitators, emphasizing their role in fostering a culture of learning and professional development. By modelling best practices, providing real-time feedback, and encouraging reflective practice, clinical facilitators help student nurses develop the clinical and leadership competencies essential for aged care. Their mentorship goes beyond technical skill-building, as they also nurture critical thinking, empathy, and resilience—qualities that are essential for future leaders in a challenging and evolving sector. By serving as role models and mentors, clinical facilitators are pivotal in ensuring that the aged care workforce is prepared to meet the demands of an aging population with innovation, compassion, and excellence in care delivery.
