Precis

Multicultural ageing presents unique challenges and opportunities as societies globally navigate demographic shifts towards increasingly diverse populations of older adults. Our submission explores the imperative of empowering communities in the co-design of solutions tailored to meet the needs of multicultural ageing populations.

Ageing varies across cultures, influenced by socio-economic status, cultural beliefs, language proficiency, and healthcare access. These factors shape the ageing experience and necessary support systems. Empowering communities means involving older adults from diverse backgrounds in creating policies, programs, and services that meet their specific needs and preferences.

Co-designing solutions with multicultural communities enhances the relevance and effectiveness of ageing initiatives. It encourages the recognition and preservation of cultural identities, traditions, and values, thereby promoting a sense of belonging and dignity among older adults. Additionally, co-design promotes innovation by utilising cultural diversity to find creative solutions to the complex aged care challenges. Successful implementation of co-designed solutions relies on collaborative partnerships between policymakers, healthcare providers, community organisations, and the older Australians. These partnerships facilitate culturally competent care and service delivery models that respect and respond to the diversity within ageing populations. They also promote education and training initiatives aimed at enhancing cultural awareness and sensitivity among caregivers and service providers.

Addressing the needs of Australia’s multicultural ageing populations through empowerment and co-design not only improves the quality of life but further strengthens social cohesion and inclusion within communities. It underscores the importance of equity and accessibility in ageing-related policies and practices, ensuring that older Australians are not marginalised due to cultural or linguistic differences. Enabling communities to co-design solutions for multicultural ageing is vital for building inclusive societies where all older adults can age with dignity, respect, and culturally appropriate support. Our submission advocates for collective efforts to embrace diversity and promote fair ageing experiences for everyone worldwide.
