Liz is a UK-registered architect who prior to moving to Sydney worked for ten years for dementia design specialists BPA Architecture. Her design of CareUK’s Edinburgh home was nominated in the 2014 Pinder’s awards for ‘Best Large Dementia Home’. As an Associate with Stirling University’s DSDC she conducted audits and delivered design training to architects and care providers.

Liz spent six years at HammondCare, designing and delivering buildings and delivering design training through their Dementia Centre. She was a lead author of the National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines.

The session will show how new buildings can meet the National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines without increased budget and how strategic improvements can transform existing buildings to better meet the Guidelines.

The session will provide:

An overview of The National Aged Care Design Principles and Guidelines as a benchmark for best practice design
A case study of a new building aligned with the Guidelines
Several case studies of existing buildings transformed to a small household model

The session will focus on:

The built outcomes
What the principles and guidelines require in practice
How early planning and brief development were fundamental to outcomes
How to assess existing buildings using the department’s chat (online tool)
How to set up projects to stay on budget and on program
Challenges and strategies for addressing recurrent issues in refurbishment work
